M1|MAPPING ROBOT DESIGN FOR NAVER LABS

VLND designed M1, an indoor 3D/HD mapping robot that navigates autonomously in indoor spaces. Via high-performance cameras and LiDAR, M1 automatically collects high-resolution images and 3D spatial data what was previously a manual mapping process, much more efficient. The resulting HD maps provide spatial data that is essential to location-based services, such as AR walking navigation and indoor autonomous service robots.

Design for Maximizing Scan Range and Driving Safety
VLND focused on maximizing LiDAR's scan range, while enhancing driving safety and gaining an accurate sense of proportionality. The two upper 16-channels of LiDAR's were fixed at uniquely deviated angles and at an ideal height that maximizes the scan area. Each LiDAR scans at a speed of 300,000 points per second with a Horizontal FOV of 360 degrees and a Vertical FOV of 30 degrees. 

VLND designed it 490mm wide allowing it to pass through most doors, and adopted it a square foot print that maximizes wheelbase and tread and minimizes overhang to improve driving safety. This design has tapered shape with the heavy modules such as motors and batteries at the bottom, which lowers the center of gravity and increases driving safety.

​Iconic Design, Reminiscent of Precision Technologies 
VLND focused on the visualization of performance precision and functional accuracy.








M1 uses real-time 3D SLAM(Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) with hierarchical motion planning. It transforms point cloud data scanned by laser sensors into 3D spatial data, and creates indoor 3D maps though the use of precision mapping technology. High-resolution indoor 3D maps generated by M1 opens up possibilities for commercial and industrial applications.

Users can recognize its operating status at a glance due to the lighting indicators at the chest and at the bottom. The two covers on the front and back of the bottom are for battery replacement.

Four mecanum wheels allow it to move in all directions for smooth scanning.

The back cover is for easy maintenance of core system, and the emergency stop button on the back is for sudden malfunctions.








M1 demonstrated making 3D indoor precision maps autonomously at the Seoul Motor Show for 10 days. Korean media and public showed a lot of interest in the first robot made by NAVER. It plans to digitize the indoor spaces that have not been accessible to GPS.
